Toon Mailer news…

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Apologies for not sending out today’s Toon Mailer. We had a family emergency this morning, and I’ve spent the better part of the last few hours in the hospital. The crisis is over now, but I just wanted to put this out there in case you’re on the Toon Mailer list and didn’t receive today’s comic in your InBox.

Here are the rough pencils I scanned in for today’s guest-star comic featuring Paul Studiman. When I work on multi-panel comics, I write the script first. Then I block in the images (usually in free-form fashion on a sketchbook page).

I’ll then cut and paste the pencils and arrange them within Photoshop. Then it’s onto inking in Painter X, followed by coloring in Photoshop, once again.

King Bob

I’ve got a tentative game-plan of making a new poster – featuring Bob wearing costumes from every country of the world. This one’s a warm-up sketch, gearing up for that idea. So, what do you think? Is this is something people would be interested in?

Tuesday plugs…

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Outside of the latest Uncubed, here are some other noteworthy sites you should check out this morning:

PSDTuts: Some of the best Photoshop Tutorials on the web. Very high quality step-by-step techniques to get the most out of Photoshop. This one, on cool lighting effects, struck my fancy.

11 Ways to Get Rid of Brain Rot – clear out the cobwebs in your head and add more brain muscle.

Your Hard Drive Will Fail (It’s Just a Question of When) – there is no such thing as permanency when it comes to storage. Most of this info is old hat to most techies – but the one that’s probably the most overlooked is testing your restored data every once in a while.

25 Beautifully Colored Websites: Good design is never accidental.  Here are some tips for making your color choices more effective. I didn’t recognize any of the websites on the list, save for Veerle’s Blog, which I already peruse.

Happy Tuesday!

Faced with a half dead 20″ display and a 19″ monitor that’s too small for real work, I bit the bullet and ponied up some of my freelance earnings for a 30″ Samsung. Gorgeous colors – no dead pixels out of the box. This thing is pure awesome. I’m using it with my Macbook Pro, and – very soon – my new workstation beast.

The Server Switch

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

Last night Lunarpages moved my domains over to a new server (bigger, faster, stronger, etc.). A few comments that came through last night / this morning were lost in the shuffle – but outside of that, I believe things are running okay. Hopefully the site loads faster now…

Let me know if you experience any unusual behavior with the site…

Webcomic Advice by Dick Dale

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

Well, not exactly.

Surf guitar legend Dick Dale’s advice is geared for up-and-coming musicians, but I feel that much of what he says is equally pertinent to writers, webcartoonists, and other creative types. What you create is your own – so be careful before you sign any contracts or deals. Special thanks to my pal Justin Hamrick for sending this along.
